Kim's research involves the investigation of geologic relationships and mineralogy of solid surface planets using visible/near-infrared remote sensing datasets. Her current focus is on understanding the distribution and formation of phyllosilicates and other alteration minerals indicative of past aqueous activity, as well as primary mineralogy and ices, on Mars. Her recent work has focused on alteration minerals in Gale crater, Margaritifer Terra, and the Huygens impact basins. She has mentored students in Mars research projects that investigate oxalate minerals, lower crustal materials exposed in impact basin rings, and spectrally distinct eolian deposits that form a chain of maculae near the base of Olympus Mons. She is also the Science Operations Lead for the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and for the Dragonfly mission to Titan that is expected to launch in 2026.
