Parvathy Prem’s research interests lie in developing and applying computational methods to study solar system bodies and their interactions with the space environment. She is particularly interested in the diverse range of worlds that host rarefied atmospheres or surface boundary exospheres – from Mercury and the Moon to small bodies and outer solar system satellites. In her doctoral research, she used a combination of rarefied gas dynamics, radiative transfer and surface thermal models to investigate the transport and sequestration of water on the Moon in the aftermath of a volatile-rich impact. At APL, Dr. Prem is working on developing numerical models of infrared emission and radar scattering from the lunar surface to assist in the interpretation of remote sensing data, with a view to increasing our understanding of the Moon’s surface thermal environment and the nature of lunar polar volatiles.
