Dr. Ian J. Cohen is a Senior Professional Staff member at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL).  He received his B.A. with distinction in Astronomy & Physics from Boston University in 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he attended the University of New Hampshire, where he obtained his Ph.D. (2015) in Physics while working in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Research Lab within the UNH Space Science Center. He joined the JHU/APL Solar & Space Physics Group in 2015 as a Postdoctoral Fellow working as part of the NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) investigation.

His current research interests focus on experimental space physics, specifically magnetospheric and plasma physics including magnetosphere-iononsphere coupling (including ion outflow, auroral dynamics, and ionospheric feedback); energetic particle dynamics; and plasma and energetic particle instrumentation. He currently serves as Deputy Lead for the MMS/EPD investigation and Instrument Scientist for the MMS Energetic Ion Spectrometer (EIS) instruments. He is also part Deputy Project Scientist for NASA's Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission.
