Dr. Xun Zhu received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington Department of Atmospheric Sciences in 1987. He has been working on many problems in the Earth’s middle atmosphere and planetary atmospheres, primarily in the areas of atmospheric dynamics and radiation. As a result, Dr. Zhu has published more than 60 papers in refereed scientific journals, over 40 as first author. He is the chief editor of a book (“Observation, Theory and Modeling of Atmospheric Variability”) that has been on publisher’s list of monthly best sellers for several months.  Over the years, Dr. Zhu has developed an accurate and efficient algorithm to calculate the net radiative heating rate in the middle atmosphere, and this algorithm has been implemented in the middle atmosphere models of many research groups around the world. He has also developed the JHU/APL 2-D model and a spectral tidal model for modeling the chemistry, dynamics and transport in the Earth middle atmosphere. Dr. Zhu’s broad background in theoretical physics and applied mathematics, coupled with his extensive programming experience, has led him to work on several comprehensive problems regarding the outer planets and their satellites, including the development of various models for the atmospheres of Pluto, Titan, Triton and Io. He also solved conclusively a long-standing problem of equatorial superrotation in a slowly rotating planetary atmosphere.

In addition, Dr. Xun Zhu has made important contributions to the fields other than his home field of atmospheric sciences, including data analysis technique based on continuous wavelet transform, optimization algorithm based on the adaptive simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation method, and numerical modeling of laser ablation processes.
