I am a Co-Investigator and team participant on several NASA planetary missions and instruments including NEAR-Shoemaker, MRO/CRISM, LRO, Hayabusa 1 and 2, OSIRIS-REx, New Horizons, and MESSENGER.  I develop and test analytical and numerical geophysical models of planetary processes to gain insights into the evolution of planetary and asteroidal surfaces and atmospheres. The geological processes I study include impact catering, geological hazards, aeolian processes, and  tectonics. Modeling results are tested in the laboratory (including the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory wind tunnel facility and NASA AMES, NASA/JSC, the University of Tokyo gun ranges, and the JHU/APL Planetary Impact Laboratory), and at planetary scales through terrestrial fieldwork and planetary remote sensing observations. I've designed and developed the Planetary Impact laboratory (PIL) at JHU/APL, including a vertical gun range and an ejecta simulator. I've also developed a planetary surface sampling device. I participated extensively in the development of the LORRI camera on New Horizons, and participated in Phase A mission studies for Aladdin to Phobos and Deimos, and Comet Hopper  to comet P46Wirtanen, and am project scientist for the MANTIS asteroid tour mission concept. I have advised several undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have since extensively contributed to the planetary science communitee. I contributed to and led many education and public outreach efforts in space science. In addition to my work at JHU/APL. I have also been an Associate Professor of Planetary Science in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at JHU.
