Doctor Chartier is the principal investigator (PI) of the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) high-frequency (HF) over-the-horizon radar at NASA Wallops (VA). His research goal is to understand the dynamics of the high-latitude ionosphere and its effects on radio propagation. Related to that goal, he has addressed science topics including polar cap plasma patches, interactions between the thermosphere and ionosphere, and global ionospheric data assimilation. In 2019, he built a bistatic HF ionospheric sounder and deployed it to McMurdo and South Pole stations in Antarctica. Alex is PI of several NSF grants, and institutional PI of a NASA Living With a Star targeted research project on extreme space weather events. His thesis titled “Ionospheric Specification and Forecasting” was ranked second nationally across Geophysics by the Royal Astronomical Society (UK). Doctor Chartier also won the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Outstanding Paper Award for Young Scientists with his first paper. Since coming to the USA, Alex has been awarded Alien of Extraordinary Ability status.  His hobbies include sailing, rock climbing and playing drums.
