Extensive background in active and passive microwave remote sensing of the Earth, ocean, and atmosphere. Have analyzed delay-Doppler ice sounding data to retrieve ice thickness over the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Have derived Stokes parameters and daughter products for hybrid-polarity radars for planetary exploration applications. Have extensive experience in modeling and analysis of active and passive microwave remote sensing data to retrieve geophysical parameters from the ocean and from sea ice. Have served as principal scientist in a wind-wave facility to measure radar backscatter from water waves and targets under a wide variety of laboratory conditions and in the field. Have led field efforts to calibrate active microwave sensors, measure atmospheric water vapor, and conduct stereo optical measurements of water waves. Have developed analysis software for mine and Unexploded Ordinance (UXO) time decay signatures, analyzed data acquired from buried mines and false alarms, and presented the results to the scientific community. Have participated in analysis of ground and flight calibration efforts for space-bourne optical sensors for planetary exploration.

2011 2014 Remote Sensing Scientist Space Research Defense Group, Space Department, The Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory Developed a reader for NCEP reanalysis data for input to radiative transfer models. Participated in the development of training documents on atmospheric correction. Developed calibration and analysis software to generate radiances and reflectivities of clouds and other natural targets for visible and infrared wavelengths.
2004 2011 Remote Sensing Scientist Ocean Remote Sensing Group, Space Department, JHU-APL Served as Deputy Lead for acquisition of marine-band radar data from natural and man-made targets at grazing incidence during a field test in Hawaii, January 2010. Led calibration effort for field measurements and analysis of a marine-band radar at grazing incidence, May 2006. Have analyzed ice sounding data from the PARIS delay-Doppler radar sounder to retrieve ice thickness over the Greenland and Antarctic ice.
2000 2004 Remote Sensing Scientist Acoustics and Electromagnetics Group, Submarine Technology Department, JHU-APL Led a field experiment to perform three-camera stereo optics measurements from the FRF Pier in Duck, N.C. of wave slopes and amplitudes, October, 2001. Collaborated in the analysis of Doppler spectra obtained from ocean waves for a wide variety of ocean wave conditions, ranging from near-shore littoral to deep ocean. Analyzed deep ocean data for sea spikes.
1998 2000 General Physical Scientist Civil Service Naval/National Ice Center Served as Point of Contact for national and international media providing technical information and updates on major iceberg events in the Weddell and Ross Seas.Participated in the development, verification, and implementation of Advanced Reasoning Using Knowledge for Typing of Sea Ice (ARKTOS).
1994 1998 Physical Scientist, Civil Service, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Remote Sensing Section Remote Sensing Division Developed a theoretical model of ocean wave growth in its initial phases of wave generation by wind stress and non-linear wave-wave interactions for use in radiometric and scatterometric wind parameter retrievals. Performed multi-frequency passive microwave measurements at 19, 22, and 37 GHz from an elevated platform to provide synoptic maps of tropospheric water vapor.
1987 1994 Physical Scientist in Ocean Measurements Section, Space Sensing Branch, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Principal scientist in a wind-wave facility to measure radar backscatter from water waves and targets under a wide variety of laboratory conditions and in the field. Developed a theoretical model of wave spectral density for comparison with radar cross section measurements. Developed a theoretical model of shortwave-longwave interactions.
1983 1987 Physical Scientist Passive Microwave Section, Space Sensing Branch, U. S. Naval Research Laboratory Developed algorithms to retrieve ice concentration, ice type, and ice thickness from passive microwave measurements and supporting environmental sensors. Collaborated with researchers at other institutions to publish the results of inter-sensor ice parameter retrievals comparison.
